Is the Apple Watch Series 6 Waterproof?

The Apple Watch Series 6 is the best smartwatch you can buy, but it still isn’t the best smartwatch for swimming.

When I first saw the Apple Watch Series 6 at an Apple Store in Seattle, I was really impressed by the design. It looks great, and the size and weight are perfect for the wrist. The Series 6 has a sapphire crystal that’s scratch-resistant, and the display is the same size and resolution as the Series 4. But the Series 6 doesn’t have the same IP68 water resistance rating as the Apple Watch Series 4.

I spent a few days using the Series 6 for swimming, and while it was comfortable and easy to use, it didn’t feel like the most water-resistant smartwatch you can buy.

Let’s dive into what the Series 6 offers, and get to know if it’s a waterproof smartwatch.

Is the Series 6 Apple Watch Waterproof?

Is the Apple Watch Series 6 Waterproof?

The Apple Watch Series 6 is not waterproof from a technical standpoint. There is a distinction between waterproof and water-resistant. The Apple Watch is waterproof, which means it can’t be damaged by water. Instead, it’s water-resistant, which means it’s OK to submerge the Apple Watch in certain situations. Those situations, on the other hand, are quite precise.

The Apple Watch Series 6 complies with ISO standard 22810:2010, indicating that it is water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters. Apple, on the other hand, advises against wearing it to that extent.

According to Apple, the Apple Watch Series 6 is suitable for near-surface water exposure, so you should be alright using it at the water’s surface. Because the strain on the watch increases as you go further into the water, the seals that keep water out may be breached.

High pressure might cause the seals that keep your watch safe to fail, according to Apple. As a result, Apple advises against wearing your watch when surfing or diving.

If you’re going to be in the water, you’ll want to activate the Water Lock before exposing the watch. To lock the display, swipe up from the bottom and tap the water droplet in the Control Center.

Turn the digital crown clockwise several times to disable the Water Lock feature. Don’t be scared; while the watch expels any water that may have gotten inside, you’ll hear a sequence of sounds and feel some vibrations. To ensure that no water gets back inside the device, Apple recommends drying it with a towel.

Is it possible to wash my hands with the Apple Watch Series 6?

You can wear your watch while washing your hands because it is water-resistant. Apple also has an application that recognizes when you’re washing your hands automatically.

Hand soaps, lotions, and other chemicals can cause the watch’s seals to break down over time, so avoid exposing it to anything that could compromise its water resistance level.

Is it OK for me to wear my Apple Watch to the pool?

Is the Apple Watch Series 6 Waterproof?

You can swim with your Apple Watch on your wrist. According to the ISO water resistance standard, the Apple Watch should be waterproof in shallow water. Shallow pools are those that are only a few feet deep. You can even swim in the water while wearing your Apple Watch; just make sure it’s not slamming against anything.

This includes slamming the watch against the water’s surface. Water, although being a liquid, is relatively hard and can impair the Apple Watch’s seals. As a result, Apple advises customers not to dive while wearing the watch.

The Apple Watch’s water-resistant seals could be damaged by any unexpected jolt. This includes slamming it against a wall, doorknob, or counter, dropping it, or bashing it against something hard. It’s possible that the water seals on your Watch will break even if you’ve never worn it in the water.

Apple does not encourage surfing, diving, water skiing, or other water activities because pressurized water can get past the seals and harm the electronics within. Even if the Water Lock is turned on, those activities could force water into the watch, ruining it. So, if you’re doing any of those things, leave it on the beach.

How Long Will an Apple Watch Series 6 Survive in Water?

Because the Apple Watch Series 6 is merely water-resistant and not waterproof, there is a limit to how long it can survive water. Apple advises against submerging your watch for more than 30 minutes. The seals may die after that period of time in the water.
