Sleep mode is a great feature that helps you save battery life. It does this by shutting down apps that are not being used. Sleep mode can also help you save data if you’re in an area that has limited internet service. In this article, we’ll show you how to use sleep mode on your iPhone or iPad.

How Do I Put My iPhone into Sleep Mode?

How to Use Sleep Mode on an iPhone

Sleep Mode is programmed to function automatically based on a program you create in your iPhone’s Health app. You can choose a different sleep period for each day of the week or a single time frame for every day when you set it up. When that time comes, your iPhone will go into Sleep Mode automatically. If you go to bed early and wish to manually activate Sleep Mode, you can do so from your phone’s control center or your Apple Watch.

To enable Sleep Mode on your iPhone, follow these steps:

  • On your iPhone, open the Health app.
  • In the lower right corner, tap Browse.
  • Tap Sleep.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Get Started.
  • Tap Next.
  • To set your sleep target, tap + and -, then Next.
  • Choose the days and time frame that you desire.
  • Scroll down and select your alarm preferences, then touch Add when all of the settings are correct. By default, both the wake-up alarm and the snooze feature are turned on.
  • Tap Next. If you wish to set a different bedtime for different days of the week, go back to step 6 and tap Add Schedule.
  • Enable the Sleep Screen by tapping it.
  • Adjust the wind-down period with the – and + buttons, then hit Enable Wind Down. If you wish to keep your iPhone’s full functionality till bedtime, tap Skip instead.
  • If you wish to add soothing apps to your lock screen, choose Set Up Shortcuts; otherwise, tap Skip.
  • Tap Done.
  • When you set the time for your iPhone to go to sleep, it will do so automatically.

How to Enable Sleep Mode Manually on an iPhone

The Sleep Mode feature is supposed to turn on when you’re sleeping, but our actual sleep cycles don’t often match our intended sleep timetables. If you ever need to manually put your iPhone to sleep, you may do it using the control center.

Here’s how to manually activate sleep mode:

  • Open your iPhone’s control center. On iPhone X and newer, swipe down from the upper right corner of the screen. Swipe up from the bottom on iPhone 8 and earlier, iPhone SE, and Apple Watch.
  • Press the Focus button for a long time. If you’re using an older version of iOS and the control center shows a bed icon, press that instead.
  • Tap Sleep.
  • Sleep Mode will be activated on your iPhone.

Can You Put an iPhone in Sleep Mode From Apple Watch?

You can turn Sleep Mode on and off directly from your Apple Watch if you wear it to bed.

Here’s how to use an Apple Watch to put your iPhone in Sleep Mode:

  • Open your watch’s control center.
  • Tap Focus. If you’re using a previous version of watchOS, tap the bed icon instead.
  • Tap Sleep.
  • Sleep Mode will be activated on your iPhone.

Do Not Disturb vs. Sleep Mode: What’s the Difference?

Focus settings in iOS include Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode. You can adjust how your phone acts based on the activities you’re doing right now using focus choices. Work is the other default Focus option, and you can build your own unique options as well.

When engaged, both Do Not Disturb and Sleep Mode prevents you from being bothered by calls and notifications. Sleep Mode brings with it a dimmed screen, a dimmed lock screen, and the ability to disable alerts from appearing on the lock screen. When Sleep Mode is enabled, you may also choose to include shortcuts to select apps directly from the lock screen.
