How to Fix the Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death

Last Updated on by Daniel Lawrence

I’m writing this article to help people who have the Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death issue. I have been using it for 2 weeks and I have tried every solution I can find on the internet to fix the BSOD. I am happy to say that after many hours of searching, I have found the fix that worked for me.

Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death Causes

The Oculus Quest black screen of death can be caused by a variety of difficulties. The headset may not turn on if the batteries are dead or do not have a sufficient amount of charge. A blank screen might also be caused by stuck or interrupted firmware updates. For example, if your Oculus password has changed and you can no longer log in, it may become stuck updating, resulting in the black screen of death. A similar black screen problem might occur if the firmware is corrupted or the hardware is broken.

How to Fix the Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death

Try these ways to solve your black screen and get your Oculus running again:

How to Fix the Oculus Quest Black Screen of Death

Make sure the headset is charged. You’ll only see a blank screen if the headset isn’t charged. Connect the headset to a USB charger that is compatible with it and leave it alone for a bit. If it doesn’t appear to be charging, switch chargers or double-check that you’re using a compatible charger. Because the Oculus charger generates 2A, charging with a lower amperage charger will take longer.

  • Activate the Oculus menu:  Try pushing the menu button on your left controller and the Oculus button on your right controller while the screen is blank. Whether this allows you to see the menu, try opening an app to see if the black screen issue is resolved.
  • Look into the Oculus app:  If it doesn’t log you in automatically, open the Oculus app on your phone and log in. Check to see if the app recognizes your headset and then try playing a game from within the app. Put your headset on after starting the game to see if the black screen issue has been resolved.

Note: In addition to the black screen of death, you can be suffering a boot loop.

  • Keep the headset plugged in and on:  If you’ve tried charging the headset but still get a dark screen, wait at least 30 minutes. If the headset is updating, leaving it alone while connected to power may allow it to complete the update and resume normal operation.

Note: Check that you’ve successfully joined the Oculus app as detailed in the previous step, that your phone recognizes the headset, and that everything is connected to the internet. Depending on the speed of your network, updating the headset may take a long time. You can also try updating the Quest or Quest 2 manually.

  • The proximity sensor should be checked: A small proximity sensor is located between the lenses in your headset. To see if the black screen goes away, cover the sensor with your thumb. If it doesn’t work, use a dry microfiber cloth to clean the sensor.

Note: Check for gaps or defects that could be allowing light to flow through the foam insert or spacer if the black screen goes away when you cover the sensor with your thumb but not when you’re wearing the headset.

  • Restart your computer completely:  If the power button causes the screen to go black, press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. Holding down the power button causes a hard reboot of the Oculus Quest, which can fix a variety of issues like the black screen of death.
  • For at least 10 seconds, press and hold the volume down and power buttons.
  • Using the volume buttons, select the boot device.
  • To hard reboot your Quest, press the power button.

Note: Use the bootloader menu to get started. If a hard reboot with just the power button isn’t possible, attempt a hard reboot through the bootloader menu.

  • For at least 10 seconds, press and hold the volume down and power buttons.
  • Using the volume buttons, highlight Factory Reset.
  • Press the power button.
  • Reset the Quest or Quest 2 to factory settings: This is a drastic procedure, as it wipes all of your data off the headset and resets it to its factory settings. Before you try this remedy, make sure you’ve explored all other possibilities. You’ll have to re-download everything, and all of your saved data will be lost.

Conclusion

If you’ve tried all of these solutions and still get the black screen of death, your hardware is most likely the problem. If you perform a factory reset and still get the black screen of death, or if you can’t access the bootloader and can’t execute a factory reset, this is the most likely scenario. You’ll very certainly need to contact Oculus for more help and have your headset repaired or replaced.
