Factors to Consider When Factory Resetting a Meta (Oculus) Quest or Quest 2

The Oculus Quest or Oculus Quest 2 headsets can be factory reset to their original state. This procedure removes firmware upgrades and returns the system to its original state. It also deletes all stored game data and downloaded games, as well as any settings you’ve changed.

Factory resetting an Oculus Quest or Quest 2 is needed for two reasons:

  • You’re selling or giving away the headset: Before selling or giving away your Oculus Quest, conduct a factory reset. The individual who receives the headset can then start from scratch.
  • The headset isn’t working properly: If you’re having issues with your Quest headset, a factory reset will usually solve the problem. This is an irreversible process, thus it should only be used as a last option. You can conduct a factory reset if you’ve tried everything else and don’t mind losing all of your saved data.

Restarting is a better option otherwise.

If you merely want to restart your Quest and don’t want to destroy everything and start over, there is an option. The restart option is found in the headset’s power menu, and it causes the headset to power down and restart when selected. It can typically resolve a variety of issues without deleting your data.
