In this post, we’ll walk you through the steps of adding apps to your Vizio smart TV, and the different methods you can use to do this.

How to Install Apps on a SmartCast Television

How to Add Apps to Your Vizio Smart TV

SmartCast TVs come with over 100 preinstalled core apps that may be found on your SmartCast home screen. There is no way to download more apps; nonetheless, new apps are released on a regular basis and are easily obtainable following an update.

If an app you wish to use isn’t available on your screen, you might be able to access its features by getting it to your mobile device and casting it to your TV using Chromecast or AirPlay.

Install an App on Your Vizio TV

Casting to your Vizio TV is just like casting to a Chromecast device.

  • Open the Google Play Store on your mobile device.
  • Tap Install to install the Chromecast-enabled app you wish to cast to your Vizio TV. The app is integrated into your smartphone’s cast options once installed.
  • Open the app, then tap the Cast icon to pick your Vizio TV.

Note: You’ll see more Vizio TVs or Chromecast devices listed as options if you have them in your home.

  • On your Vizio Smart TV, your material will begin to play.

Note: You can continue to use your phone, or even turn it off and leave the house with it.

  • When the program ends or you use your Vizio remote to conduct another operation on the TV, the casted content will stop playing.

With AirPlay, you may stream content to your Vizio TV.

  • You’ll use the TV’s built-in AirPlay features to stream AirPlay content from an iOS app to your Vizio TV.
  • Ascertain that your Vizio TV and iOS smartphone are both connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • On your iOS device, download the app whose content you want to stream, and then launch it.
  • Select your Vizio TV by tapping the AirPlay icon. Your device’s content is now visible on the big screen.

SmartCast Core App Customization

Vizio SmartCast TVs come with over 100 apps pre-installed. Without casting, you can access them immediately on the screen. It’s simple to personalize your app selection so that your favorites are always within reach.

  • Select the Customize App Row icon with your remote control.
  • Select an app and move it around using the left and right arrow cursors. Select OK > Done when you’re finished. If you change your mind, select Cancel.

What Is the Difference Between VIA and VIA+?

Instead of SmartCast, certain older Vizio TVs use the VIA or VIA+ smart TV platform.

The VIA and VIA+ platforms work in the same way as many other smart TVs do. You start with a core collection of apps and expand from there with the help of an app store. VIA and VIA+ also allow you to mirror or cast content from some apps on your mobile device.

Adding Apps to a VIA or VIA+ TV

Some Vizio 2012-2014 models are no longer compatible with Netflix. For further information, contact your TV’s technical support.

You’ll get a set of basic apps with the VIA and VIA+ platforms, such as Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, YouTube, Pandora, and iHeart Radio, but you can add many more from the Vizio app store. You can also add Google Play: Movies and TV apps to some devices.

Here’s how to use Via and VIA+ to add more apps to smart TVs:

  • To return to the home screen, press the V button on your Vizio TV remote.
  • Select Connected TV Store > All Apps on VIA. Choose an app category (Featured, Latest, All Apps, or Categories) with VIA +.
  • Choose the app you wish to install.
  • To install VIA, select OK > Install App. Press and hold OK for VIA+ until the app appears in the My Apps list.

Note: A colored star appears in the top-right corner of the app icon after it is installed.

  • To play content from an installed app, use the remote to choose its icon.

Note: To remove an app from a Vizio TV running the VIA or VIA+ platform, pick it and then select Delete > OK. You can reinstall the app at any time by going to the App Store.

About Vizio’s Various Systems

Adding and maintaining apps on Vizio TVs and Home Theater Displays differs depending on whether you have a SmartCast, VIA, or VIA+ system.

The following is a list of Vizio systems by model year:

  • SmartCast is available on all Vizio smart TVs from 2018 onwards.
  • Tuneless Home Theater Displays with SmartCast are available in 2016 and 2017.
  • SmartCast or VIA+ are available on Vizio smart TVs in 2016 and 2017.
  • Vizio smart TVs from 2015 and after having VIA or VIA+.

To figure out the system you have, look through the user guide. To use any of Vizio’s app platforms, your TV or home theater display must be linked to your home network and the internet.

What is SmartCast and How Does It Work?

The Google Chromecast platform serves as the backbone of SmartCast, allowing app content to be cast to a TV from a suitable mobile device. Because Chromecast is embedded into SmartCast technology, you don’t need to plug in a Chromecast dongle. The TV will automatically change from the current source input (such as a TV channel or HDMI input) to the streaming source when you start a cast.

SmartCast-compatible programs will display a SmartCast icon, and SmartCast will even make recommendations based on your viewing history. You may also use the SmartCast mobile app to control the functionality of your Vizio TV, such as input selection, picture calibration, and sound settings.
