How to Connect AirPods to PS5

With the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, Apple announced that they will be releasing new pairs of AirPods. They are a great idea as it makes it so easy to listen to music while you’re doing other things like watching TV. With this, there is one problem that I’m sure many of you have, how to connect AirPods to PS5.

Luckily, we’re here to help.

How to Connect AirPods to a PlayStation 5

Although the PS5 may appear to be the latest and greatest video game console, it does not enable Bluetooth audio when purchased. That means you can’t use any Bluetooth headphones with the PlayStation 5, even AirPods, without purchasing an attachment.

Although the PS5 can detect your AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones, the linking process fails at the final step. Terrible error!

This limitation can be overcome by using a Bluetooth audio adaptor that plugs into the console. Fortunately, there are numerous Bluetooth adapters available, all of which are reasonably priced. Adapters connect to the PS5’s USB ports, your TV’s USB ports, or the PS5 controller’s headphone jack. They all work in the same way, so choose the one that appeals to you.

While the instructions in this post are specific to connecting AirPods to a PlayStation 5, they apply to any Bluetooth headphones (or another Bluetooth device).

Follow these instructions to connect AirPods to PS5:

  • Ensure that your AirPods are fully charged. Make sure your Bluetooth adapter is charged if it connects to the PS5 controller and utilizes a battery. Adapters that connect to the PS5 or TV are powered by those devices and do not require charging.
  • Connect your PS5, TV, or controller to the Bluetooth adaptor.
  • Pair the Bluetooth adaptor with your phone. Check the instructions because different devices enter pairing mode in somewhat different ways. A blinking light usually signifies that it is in pairing mode.
  • Check that the AirPods are in their charging case before opening it. Press and hold the case’s button.
  • Keep pressing the button on the AirPods case until the light on the Bluetooth adapter goes solid. That means the AirPods are connected to the adapter.
  • Insert the AirPods into your ears. On the PS5, try playing a game or doing something else that uses audio. Your AirPods should pick up the audio from the PS5.

If You Can’t Hear Audio, What Should You Do?

If you’ve followed the procedures above but still don’t hear anything from your AirPods, make sure they’re properly linked with your PS5.

  • Select Settings from the Home screen.
  • Select Sound.
  • Opt for Audio Output.
  • Choose an output device.
  • Select your Bluetooth device on the next screen.
  • Under the Accessories section of Settings, you may also find handy options.

Can You Use AirPods to Talk to Other Gamers on PS5?

When using AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones with the PS5, there are two major drawbacks.

First, there is usually some latency—also known as delay—between what you see onscreen and what you hear using Bluetooth headphones. This is because of the way Bluetooth transmits audio to the headphones. The audio delay with AirPods may be intolerable if you demand very outstanding quality from your gaming.

Next, regardless of the fact that AirPods have a microphone (after all, they can be used to answer phone calls), you can’t use them to talk with other gamers. You’ll need PS5 headsets or a Bluetooth adaptor with a microphone that plugs into the PlayStation controller for this.

If you want to go all out, Apple’s high-end AirPods Max headphones are a good option. The AirPods Max may be connected to the PS5 controller through a headphone wire. Just make sure the audio output and microphone input settings are accurate.
