Onkyo SKF-4800 Review

Onkyo SKF-4800 Review

Last Updated on by Daniel Lawrence

In this Onkyo SKF-4800 review, we’re gonna take a look at one of the more attractive models of the Japanese electronics manufacturer, specializing in audio equipment and home cinema, Onkyo.

In this post, I would like to discuss the Onkyo SKF-4800, the #33 best-selling 2-way bass reflex speaker on Amazon right now (2nd October).

Since Onkyo originates from the Japanese word for sound harmony, I feel as though I might be able to have some expectations regarding the quality.

Onkyo SKF-4800 will be paired with a surround speaker system or home cinema system for most people considering the purchase of those speakers.

Build Quality & Design

From the first impression, the design is very clean and elegant, considering the decor-enhancing natural finish. By putting the woofers and tweeters in the perfect positions, Onkyo also managed to make the first impression very appealing.

As I mentioned, there are two 6.3-inch woofers and a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter on the front baffle. It is also possible to connect the Onkyo SKF-4800 to banana plugs.

MDF stabilizer, a composite material of resin and wood fibers, works to prevent vibration in the Onkyo SKF-4000. Comparatively to other tower speakers with little spikes at the bottom, the black and thin stabilizer looks absolutely amazing.

I find the overall design very stylish and modern. I like that there is only one color with different shades on all the sides, which makes the transition between the sides very natural.

According to the picture, the front grille doesn’t cover the entire front side of the vehicle. The SKF-4000 has the same little silver rectangle at the bottom as all other Onkyos models, emphasizing the unique nature of the brand.

Sound Quality & Performance

There’s a strong point to it when it comes to the sound quality. The Onkyo SKF-4000 tower speakers produce very clear, detailed, and enjoyable sound with decent bass responses.

As I mentioned previously, I believe most people will buy those speakers to add to a home theatre system or a large surround speaker system. It’s totally fine if you want only the Onkyo SKF-4000 to be part of your hi-fi system, but I think for most people, the bass wouldn’t be enough, so I recommend purchasing a subwoofer as well.

The sound experience will remain the same if you decide not to build a surround speaker system and only want those speakers to be part of it.

Nothing changes in terms of sound quality. However, you can’t get two things without additional equipment.

In the beginning, the surround sound experience won’t be as distinct as with more speakers; if you’re trying to create a home cinema, consider adding a center speaker such as the Polk Audio CS10.

Another thing you can do if you want to build a brilliant surround sound system is to add bookshelf speakers such as the Polk Audio T15.

Secondly, we have the reproduction of low-pitched audio frequencies (bass), useful when watching movies or listening to some very bass-demanding music genres. An excellent subwoofer will excel at this point.

I highly recommend you purchase a quality subwoofer if you intend to use the speakers to listen to rap or electronic dance music. The Onkyo SKW204 is, for example, one of its high-quality and affordable models.

Conclusion

One of the biggest strengths of the Onkyo SKF4000 2-Way Bass Reflex Floor-standing Speakers is their design, as well as their sound quality. Considering their affordability, they are a great purchase in 2019.

On the internet, people have debated whether the speakers need a subwoofer to produce crisp highs, mids, and lows. Consumers have the final say on the matter.

For rap music or EDM, I highly recommend looking up a quality subwoofer if you are buying the speakers for the purpose of listening to it. In terms of Onkyo products, the Onkyo SKW204 is an example of a high-quality and at the same time affordable model.

If you don’t need a subwoofer, I think you’ll enjoy listening to music and watching movies with the speakers.
