Last Updated on by Daniel Lawrence

MSI’s X470 Gaming Plus AM4 ATX Motherboard is based on the AMD X470 chipset, which supports AMD Ryzen and A-Series/Athlon processors with an AM4 socket. The system has four DDR4 slots that can accommodate up to 64GB of dual-channel RAM overclocked to 3466 MHz. When used with an NVMe drive, six SATA III ports and two M.2 slots can operate at speeds of up to 32 Gb/s. In addition to DVI-D and HDMI ports, this motherboard also sports two PCIe 3.0 x16 slots for dedicated GPUs, as well as one PCIe 2.0 x16 and three PCIe 2.0 x1 slots for additional PCIe-based hardware. Realtek 8111H Gigabit LAN, MSI Mystic Light RGB lighting, and Realtek ALC892 7.1-channel HD audio are also noteworthy features.

Mystic Light RGB Cover & Heatsink

MSI’s software allows you to customize RGB lighting on the X470 Gaming Plus. With Mystic Light Sync, you can even sync it with other RGB-compatible products. Choose from multiple lighting effects and millions of colors to complement your style.

For cooling, this motherboard has six fan headers that support both DC and PWM modes. If the fans are connected, you can set their speed in BIOS or with third-party software, so you can find the best balance between noise and cooling performance.

AMD CrossFire Support

Adding additional graphics cards to this motherboard will enhance performance if you aren’t getting the graphical fidelity and frame rates you want from your games. This motherboard supports AMD CrossFire-based multi-GPU setups. Ryzen desktop processors with Radeon Vega graphics and A-Series/Athlon processors only support up to 2-way CrossFire whereas Ryzen desktop processors with Radeon Vega graphics support up to 3-way CrossFire.

This motherboard features six SATA III ports for traditional 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives. Furthermore, it features two M.2 slots that can be used with an NVMe drive in order to achieve speeds of up to 32 Gb/s using the PCIe 3.0 x4 interface. Within MSI’s software, you can enable X-Boost for an additional boost in performance. MSI X470 motherboards also include STOREMI, AMD’s SSD technology that increases storage performance.

MSI Audio Boost provides you with a high-quality listening experience by combining hardware and software components. Left and right channels are built on separate PCB layers, De-Pop Protection reduces loud popping noises, an EMI-shielded audio processor ensures clear stereo and surrounds sound, and a dedicated headphone amplifier automatically detects the appropriate impedance for your headphones. With Nahimic 3, you can experience virtual surround sound with an overlay that shows where sounds are coming from in-game.

Using an optimized memory layout, these DDR4 memory slots provide stability, performance, and low power consumption. Additionally, the motherboard supports XMP for faster RAM performance. In addition, A-series/Athlon processors support frequencies up to 2400 MHz, and memory supports frequencies that depend on the installed processor.

Best motherboard for gaming

Although this is MSI’s most affordable and smallest X470 motherboard, the X470 Gaming Plus performs as well as any other X470 motherboard currently on the market.

Unlike other high-end X470 motherboards with onboard Bluetooth and WiFi, it may not have everything. But as far as motherboard features are concerned, everything is there. High memory frequency, good on-board audio, reliable overclocking, multi-GPU support. The motherboard offers a lot of options, especially if it will only be used to play games.
